People who would’ve considered it heretic to vote Conservative a generation ago are now lending their vote to the party in red wall constituencies in the North, the Midlands and Wales. This is an ongoing process. It began at the general election of 2019, but the recent victory for the party at the Hartlepool by-election proved it wasn’t the end, and it’s likely to continue at the upcoming by-election in Batley and Spen.
Labour is trailing by 20 points in the polls, despite serious mistakes and ineptitude by the Conservative government in its handling of the pandemic.
There is no returning to the assumptions of old. A journey of radical realignment is underway, but it is still far too early to determine what the final destination will be, or how long it will take to get there. You can read my article by clicking here.
